Minerals, Dirt and Rubber, Oh My!

B.96 Impurities in Tap Water

Have you recently gone to retrieve an ice cold glass of tap water only to find unwanted specks floating? This can be very unpleasant as well as unhealthy to drink!  Because of the potential problems, it’s important to correct the problem at hand.  Fortunately, there are ways to track down the source of the impurities in your household plumbing and prevent most of them.

Dirty Water: if you are finding dirt or sand in your glass it is usually an indicator that there is a water main break somewhere in the public water supply and should be addressed by your water department.

Carbon from the Filter: if the specks you are seeing are not due to a water main break, it would be coming from within your water filter.  Foreign floaties may be present if the filter breaks down or if you have a filter that needs to be replaced or repaired.

Some Metal with your Drink: bits of black specks floating in your water could be from a metal mineral.  It turns out that water in certain areas of the country can contain bits of iron or manganese.  The good news is these minerals do not pose a health hazard; however, the bad news is that it can make the water taste odd or leave stains on clothing and dishes.

Bits of Rubber: at times bits of rubber from various parts of your household plumbing can start to disintegrate and send unwanted particles into the pipes.  Often times this happens because the water has been treated with chlorine which is known to break down rubber piping over time.  In this case, it’s probably a good idea to have a plumber come check it out before further damage is done.

Rust Particles: although small amounts of rust aren’t necessarily dangerous to your health, this could be a good sign that your pipes are corroding.  In order to clear rust from your tap water you should contact a trusted plumber for additional help.

How Heavy Rain Affects Your Air Conditioner

B.94 Heavy Rain Affect AC

We all know the old saying “April showers bring May flowers”, right? Well what if those showers turn into several down pours over the course of a month? Severe amount of rain can wreak havoc on homes and businesses!  Because your HVAC is such a big investment it’s important to understand how heavy rain can affect your air conditioner.

Storm Damage: With heavy storms also comes high winds which whips debris around.  Additional debris flying around can be harmful to your unit if leaves, twigs, and other debris become lodged inside your condenser fan grille.  Once the storm has passed it’s always a good idea to check out your unit to make sure it is clear of debris and damage.

Flooding: If you live in an area that commonly floods you should be aware of how to protect your AC unit.  When a flood occurs that exceeds a foot or more of water, you should have your unit inspected by a trained and knowledgeable professional.  It’s also important to have your ductwork checked out if it is below the house in a crawlspace.

Corrosion: Aside from storm damage and flooding, corrosion can also occur inside your unit.  If you keep your unit covered during off seasons it may have caused moisture and condensation to build up which can rot wires as well as corrode or rust metal components.  Always be sure to use a specific AC unit cover which is designed to properly vent the unit.

Your AC unit is designed to withstand rain showers as well as snow and hail. Its design makes it capable of holding up in outside weather conditions. Electrical components are sealed and connections are made resistant to moisture.  The compressor and condenser in the outdoor unit are made of aluminum, copper, and other metals, and are made to handle heavy rains. SO! Yes, your unit is made to handle those April showers BUT with everything there is a limit of how much it can withstand–so it’s important to be informed.

7 Ideas for Updating Your Air Vent Covers

B.93 Updating Vent Covers

Are you looking for a painless and inexpensive way to quickly update the interior of your home??  One simple way to modernize a home is to update the air vents!  Your vents can easily make a living space outdated and throw off the feel of the room if they do not match the design in your home.  Most vents are metal grates which can look very drab and plain.  To give your home an extra touch of style we have put together a list of 7 ideas for updating your  air vent covers to keep your home updated!

  1. Wallpaper: if your vent cover is a large customized size that comes with a discouraging large price tag, wallpaper might be a great option for you.  With wallpaper you can match the design concept of the room and cover up any rust or worn vents.  The only thing you’ll have to make sure of is to cut out each slit from the grates.

  2. Spray Paint: another inexpensive route you can take is to spray paint the air vent covers.  Now days there are many types of spray paints.  Hardware stores even carry textured, chrome spray, brass spray and a wide variety of other colors to match a room’s style.

  3. Rubber Welcome Mat: think a welcome mat has one use?  Think again!  If you find a rubber welcome mat with a neat design that you like, you can easily have it tacked to cover an old air vent.B.93 Welcome mat
  4. Hinged Door Frame: making a customized frame and door to cover a vent can easily change the look of your living space.  The frame will add a polished look to an old outdated air vent.B.93 Hinged Door.jpg
  5. Aesthetic Cabinet: if you need a little extra storage space and want to update the look — a cabinet is for you!  Guests will be completely unaware that your air vent is being disguised.B.93 Cabinet.jpg
  6. Sheet Metal: a piece of framed sheet metal with a neat design pattern can update the look of your living space in a flash!  P.S BELOMAN has a sheet metal shop at our office location!B.93 Sheet Metal
  7. Old Shutter: if you’re a fan of the HGTV show ‘Fixer Upper’ and gravitate towards a more rustic décor style — a shutter would be a great idea for you.  Shutters are able to cover an old vent all while still allowing air to properly flow.B.93 Old Shutter

In all of the cases mentioned above the most important factor to keep in mind is to always make sure proper air flow is accessible from the new vent covers.  If your new concept is blocking the air flow into or out of the room you will have a problem regulating the temperature of your home.  Make your home a #BELOMANhome today!  If you would like further information you can give us a call at (618) B-E-L-O-M-A-N or visit our website here.  We would love to help you today!  For any HVAC or plumbing repairs, installations, indoor air quality, sheet metal/fabrication or pest solution help give us a call.  Like always, the #BELOMAN is here to save the day!  BELIEVE IN THE BELOMAN WAY!  We’re the only HVAC and plumbing company in the Metro East to receive the 2016 Better Business Bureau TORCH Award for ethical business practice.  The award honors excellent commitment to customer service through exceptional standards for ethical business practices.

How To: Alleviate Pet Dander In Your Home

B.92 Alleviate Pet Dander.jpg

Have you caved in to allowing your children to have a pet even though you are allergic to pets? Yes, we do crazy things for our kids, but it can be especially tough if you have a pet living at home spoiling your indoor air quality!  By becoming more informed on cat and dog allergies you can identify what exactly is making you sneeze and reduce your exposure to pet allergens to improve the air quality in your home.

Causes & Symptoms of Pet Allergies: Although dog and cat hair is usually the go-to blame for pet allergies, the culprit is actually pet dander.  Dander consists of tiny flakes of skin which can float into the air and cause allergic reactions to sensitive individuals.  The severity of your symptoms will come down to your body’s overactive immune system.  Your body is mistaking the harmful substance (pet dander) as a dangerous invader.  As your body recognizes a dangerous invader, histamines are released in attempt to attack the foreign intruder like a bacteria or virus.  This attempt to flush the dander from your system is what causes your allergies to flare up! Symptoms: sneezing, runny/stuffy nose, itchy eyes and nose, coughing and wheezing, or heightened asthma symptoms

Here’s What You Can Do:
-Confine your pet to certain areas of your home and especially keep them out of your bedroom!
-Clean on a frequent basis.  When vacuuming your home use a HEPA filter and an electrostatic duster to pick up as much dander as possible.
-Instead of carpet throughout your home, install hardwood or tile flooring to end the collection of dander in the carpet fibers.  The same technique comes into play with cloth vs. leather furniture.
-Shop around for a high efficiency furnace filter to catch pet dander as it tries to enter your ductwork and circulate throughout your home.
-Talk with an indoor air quality expert at BELOMAN to learn more about air purifiers and the great products offered through Aprilaire.  You’ve dealt with the problem enough–let us tackle the headache for you!

How To: Find the Source of a Garbage Disposal Leak

B.90 Finding Garbage Disposal Leak

Even homeowners that take great care of their garbage disposal can experience a leak or two every once in a while!  If you are suddenly faced with a large puddle under your sink a plumber will definitely be able to help. While waiting for your plumber to arrive there are a few steps you can take in order to detect the source of the leak and help alleviate the problem at hand.  When becoming a detective to search for the source of the leak it’s important to know where to begin when searching.

*Check the sink flange: this is the part that connects the top of the disposal to the bottom of the sink drain
*Check the dishwasher connection: this is the area that is usually connected by a rubber hose to the side of the disposal
*Check the drain pipe: this is the plastic or metal pipe that drains water and food away from the sewer
*Check the garbage disposal itself: self-explanatory!

To perform your test there is a quick protocol to go by:
1. Dry the outside of the disposal so that any new moisture will easily stand out
2. Wait a few minutes then observe the disposal under the sink (if you do see dripping it is a sign that your leak is coming from the sink flange)
3. If it is still dry, remove the drain plug from the sink and watch disposal closely.  There should be water coming from a possible of three points.  The location of the problem will dictate the type of fix that needs to be done.

Depending on how comfortable you are at tackling your plumbing repair you may be able to turn it into a DIY project; however, if you need any further assistance just call the BELOMAN!  It’s always best to call a professional for help if you aren’t 100% sure what needs to be done.  Calling a professional will help to avoid making the problem at hand more severe than it already is.
