Have you ever wondered what you’re really spraying into the air when your grab the nearest aerosol can with flowers or fresh linen on it? Turns out while these air fresheners do mask odors for a temporary time, they do actually have harmful components to them. Instead of using air fresheners to temporarily mask odors there are more healthy ways to keep the indoor air quality in your home up to par.
Why Can Be Harmful?
–Allergens: according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology all chemical fresheners contain irritants to the airway.
–VOCs: are known allergens according to the US Environmental Protection Agency that can produce eye/nose/throat irritation, nausea, headaches, as well as damage to liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.
–Formaldehyde: a known carcinogen is found in significant amounts of electric air fresheners. When combined with other household air fresheners the exposure is compounded and can result in eye/nose/throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, bronchitis and dizziness.
–Phthalates: hormone-disrupting chemicals found in 12 of 14 studied air fresheners may pose a health risk to babies and young children.
–1,4 dichlorobenzene: harmful to lungs and found to result in liver cancer in mice with lifetime exposure.
How to Safely Freshen Your Home:
–Ventilate ventilate ventilate: when your home has proper ventilation odors will be masked naturally rather than with air fresheners.
–Open those windows: out with the old stale confined air and in with the new fresh air!-Baking soda: baking soda has been to absorb and neutralize smells when given exposure.
–White vinegar: if you are experiencing tough odors an open container of white vinegar will surely do the trick.
–Spices: start a pot of boiling water on your stove and pop in a few of your favorite smelling spices to fill throughout your home.
–Essential oils: not to be confused with fragrance oils, essential oils are safe and effective. By adding a few drops to a diffuser or to cotton balls scattered in problematic areas you’ll be on your way to a healthy fresh home.
